How to Install a New Laptop Battery

• 1. Determine what laptop battery to buy. What battery you buy depends on the manufacturer of your laptop, as well as the model number for your laptop. Write down both pieces of information.


• 2. Go to the manufacturer's web site (e.g. HP, Dell, IBM etc.) and then type in the model number for your laptop. This should now tell you what laptop batteries are compatible with your laptop.


• 3. Purchase the battery that fits your laptop, either from a local store, your manufacturer's web site or a web site online. You may see two different batteries for your laptop--a 6-cell and a 12-cell battery. The difference between the two is the amount of battery life you'll get per charge. The 6-cell batteries generally can run a laptop for 2 1/2 to 3 hours per charge, whereas 12-cell batteries generally can run a laptop for 4-5 hours per charge.
